This performance, "Transactions & Provocations," explored the transactions inherent in viewing and displaying art. What non-monetary kinds of transactions are possible in an art space? What if you had to give a piece of art in order to receive one? We explored these questions during a site-specific, audience-participatory experience, where patrons were asked to write poetry, draw pictures, and create song titles in exchange for tokens that could be used to activate performances throughout the galleries. The transactions became even more complicated when we incorporated audience-made art into our performance and began reciting their poetry and singing their songs. The show culminated in a large interactive sculpture made of all of the art and writing that had been created during the show, and audience members were invited to take their (or another's) artwork home with them.
