Evolving Impressions
Powerhouse Theater Season, Loeb Gallery, 2024
Vassar College
Description
This performance, “Evolving Impressions,” was devised over sixteen hours of rehearsal in which the ensemble explored the question, "How do our perceptions of visual art evolve as we age?" Presented as a part of Vassar College's 38th Powerhouse Season, the rehearsal process asked performers to look at art through the lens of their seven-year-old selves and describe what they are seeing with childlike wonder. We shared these impressions in monologues and songs, and invited the audience to share fun details bout themselves as children. Audience members were given colored tokens at the beginning of the performance, and spent their experience following actors with similarly colored umbrellas. This was a delightful way for participants to move through (and interact with) the museum, aligning with our youthful explorations. This system also allowed the audience to see more of the museum, since they were moving in small groups and could maneuver the smaller galleries with ease.
